Baptism has been called a sacrament and an ordinance of Jesus Christ.

The Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry document of the World Council of Churches, attempting to present the common understanding of the Eucharist on the part of the generality of Christians, describes it as " essentially the sacrament of the gift which God makes to us in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit ", " Thanksgiving to the Father ", " Anamnesis or Memorial of Christ ", " the sacrament of the unique sacrifice of Christ, who ever lives to make intercession for us ", " the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ, the sacrament of his real presence ", " Invocation of the Spirit ", " Communion of the Faithful ", and " Meal of the Kingdom ".

The Anglican Articles of Religion hold that only Baptism and the Lord's Supper are to be counted as sacraments of the gospel, and assert that other rites considered to be sacraments by such as the Roman Catholic and Eastern churches were not ordained by Christ and do not have the nature of a sacrament in the absence of any physical matter such as the water in Baptism and the Bread and Wine in the Eucharist.

All the more urgent is the Church's call not to prevent little children coming to Christ through the gift of holy Baptism.

" The Abyssinians possess also the Ark of the Covenant ", he wrote, and, after a description of the object, describes how the liturgy is celebrated upon the Ark four times a year, " on the feast of the great nativity, on the feast of the glorious Baptism, on the feast of the holy Resurrection, and on the feast of the illuminating Cross.

The Church of the Brethren practices Anointing with Oil as an ordinance along with Baptism, Communion, Laying on of Hands, and the Love Feast.

The liturgical communities in western Christianity that derive their rituals from the Roman Missal, including those particular communities which use the Roman Missal itself ( Roman Catholics ), the Book of Common Prayer ( Anglicans / Episcopalians ), the Lutheran Book of Worship ( ELCA Lutherans ), Lutheran Service Book ( Missouri-Synod Lutherans ), use the Apostles ' Creed and interrogative forms of it in their rites of Baptism, which they consider to be the first sacrament of initiation into the Church.

Baptism ( from the Greek noun Βάπτισμα baptisma ; itself derived from baptismos, washing ) is a Christian rite of admission ( or adoption ), almost invariably with the use of water, into the Christian Church generally and also a particular church tradition.
