In 1648, preacher John Elliott was quoted in Thomas Shepherd's book " Clear Sunshine of the Gospel " with an account of the difficulties the Pilgrims were having in using the Indians to harvest cranberries as they preferred to hunt and fish.

Gospel of Thomas, usually dated to the late 1st or early 2nd century, was also among the finds in the Nag Hammadi library in 1945.

When the Gospel of Thomas was written, people commonly assumed that men were superior to women, an attitude consistent with the historical context.

The Nag Hammadi codices contain the only complete copy of the Gospel of Thomas.

In fact, Nazareth was described negatively by the evangelists ; the Gospel of Mark argues that Nazareth did not believe in Jesus and therefore he could " do no mighty work there "; in the Gospel of Luke, the Nazarenes are portrayed as attempting to kill Jesus by throwing him off a cliff ; in the Gospel of Thomas, and in all four canonical gospels, we read the famous saying that " a prophet is not without honor except in his own country.

However, the mention of a treasure in Saying 76 may reflect a source for the Gospel of Thomas in which the parables were adjacent, so that the original pair of parables has been " broken apart, placed in separate contexts, and expanded in a manner characteristic of folklore.

In the Gnostic Acts of Peter and the Twelve, found with the Gospel of Thomas in the Nag Hammadi library, the travelling pearl merchant Lithargoel is eventually revealed to be Jesus.

Thus, " All-In-God " ( see pantheism ) as stated in one of the Sayings of Gospel of Thomas: " Lift Up A Stone And You Will Find Me There ..." This seemingly contradictory interpretation of Gnosticism's theology is not without controversy.

These include the apocryphal gospels, such as the Gospel according to the Hebrews, the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

The Gospel According to Thomas, commonly shortened to the Gospel of Thomas, is a well preserved early Christian, non-canonical sayings-gospel which many scholars believe provides insight into the Christian Oral Tradition.

The Gospel of Thomas was found among a collection of fifty-two writings that included, in addition to an excerpt from Plato's Republic, gospels claiming to have been written by Jesus's disciple Philip.

It is important to note, however, that while the Gospel of Thomas does not directly point to Jesus ' divinity, it also does not directly contradict it, and therefore neither supports nor contradicts gnostic beliefs.

For example, his engraving of The Last Supper of 1523 has often been understood to have an evangelical theme, focussing as it does on Christ espousing the Gospel, as well the inclusion of the Eucharistic cup, an expression of Protestant utraquism, although this interpretation has been questioned.

Biblically this does not match three of the Gospel accounts ( Matthew, Luke, and John ) which specifically state the tomb was new and no one had ever been laid inside.

The harmony does not include Jesus ' encounter with the adulteress ( John 7: 53 – 8: 11 ), a passage that is generally considered to be a spurious late addition to the Gospel of John, with the Diatessaron itself often used as an early textual witness to support this.

The Gospel According to Mark does not name its author.

The Gospel of Matthew does not name its author.

Papias does not identify his Matthew, but by the end of the 2nd century the tradition of Matthew the tax-collector had become widely accepted, and the line " The Gospel According to Matthew " began to be added to manuscripts.

Paul defended the encyclical, saying “ It does not surprise the Church that she becomes, like her divine Founder, a ‘ sign of contradiction ’; yet she does not, because of this, cease to proclaim with humble firmness the entire moral law, both the natural law and the law of the Gospel.

All four canonical Gospels record John the Baptist's ministry, as does the non-canonical Gospel of the Hebrews.

The Gospel of John does not record the baptism directly, but only by John's description afterward ( John 1: 32-33 ).

However, the Gospel of Mark in Papyrus 45, Codex Washingtonianus and in Family 13 does indeed reflect a distinct type of text.

In his Comment on the Gospel of Matthew, which stems from a 6th century Latin translation, it is written: " In this place Jesus said Elijah was come and referred to John the Baptist it does not appear to me that by Elijah the soul is spoken of, lest I fall into the doctrine of transmigration, which is foreign to the Church of God, and not handed down by the apostles, nor anywhere set forth in the scriptures " ( ibid., 13: 1: 46 – 53 ).

The Gospel of John does not include this episode, but tells of Jesus washing the feet of the Apostles, giving the new commandment " to love one another as I have loved you ", and has a detailed farewell discourse by Jesus, calling the Apostles who follow his teachings " friends and not servants ", as he prepares them for his departure.

1 John does not give direct information about its author, but it was considered apostolic, alongside the Gospel of John.

The Gospel does not make that attribution.

In the Byzantine (" Greek ") liturgical traditions, the Gospel reading for Zacchaeus remains in the normal lectionary cycle and does not always fall on the fifth Sunday before Lent.

Tertullian does not say how the Gospel came to Britain before AD 222.

The Gospel of Thomas does not refer to Jesus as " Christ " or " Lord ," as the New Testament does, but does call him " Jesus ," and " Son of Man ," which are concurrent with the canonical Gospels ,.

" Unlike previous cinematic depictions of Jesus ' life, Pasolini's film does not embellish the biblical account with any literary or dramatic inventions, nor does it present an amalgam of the four Gospels ( subsequent films which would adhere as closely as possible to one Gospel account are 1979's Jesus, based on the Gospel of Luke, and 2003's The Gospel of John ).

" The 5th century Decretum Gelasianum includes " A Gospel attributed to Thomas which the Manichaean use " in its list of heretical books.

The 16th Century Thirty-Nine Articles list confirmation among those rites " commonly called Sacraments " which are " not to be counted for Sacraments of the Gospel " ( a term meaning Baptism and the Holy Eucharist ), as they were not directly instituted by Christ with a specific matter and form, and they are not generally necessary to salvation.

In the East, the Stichometry of Nicephorus, the list appended by the 9th century Patriarch of Jerusalem to his Chronography, lists the Epistle of Barnabas in a secondary list, of books that are antilegomena — " disputed "— along with the Revelation of John, the Revelation of Peter and the Gospel of the Hebrews.

There are further references from Durham to Boisil's book, such as a list of relics in the cathedral in 1389, and some modern scholars were attracted to the idea that they were the same, but Brown's palaeographical evidence seems to remove the possibility of Boisil's book being the St Cuthbert Gospel.
