It includes four SSSIs, formerly known as Cheddar Gorge SSSI, August Hole / Longwood Swallet SSSI, GB Cavern Charterhouse SSSI and Charterhouse on-Mendip SSSI.

SSSIs may be divided into management units, with some SSSI areas including units that are notified for both biological and geological interest.

Biological SSSIs may be selected for various reasons, governed by published SSSI Selection Guidelines.

Almost all GCR sites ( but no other sites ) are subsequently notified as geological SSSIs, except some that coincide with designated biological SSSI management units.

North Queensferry is bounded by two sites of special scientific interest ( SSSIs ), one being the shoreline of the Firth of Forth, an SSSI for its entire extent on both north and south shores, and the other the Carlingnose Point Nature Reserve.

Four small SSSIs at Harbour Cove, Rock Dunes, Trebetherick Point and Pentire Peninsula are on the estuary, while the River Camel Valley and Tributaries SSSI covers much of the Camel Valley between Egloshayle and Blisland, and then extends in several further sections of varying size right up to its source.

An SSSI may be made on any area of land which is considered to be of special interest by virtue of its fauna, flora, geological or physiographical / geomorphological features.

In practice, there is a standard list of OLDs which is almost the same for each SSSI — the list for an SSSI will only omit activities impossible on the particular SSSI ( such as fishing where there is no water ), and things requiring planning permission ( which are covered by the local planning authority consultation process ).

This meant that damaging activities such as fly-tipping, intensive bait-digging or trail biking on an SSSI were only prevented if done ( or permitted ) by the owner or occupier — not if done by trespassers or under public rights.

Because of the presence of rare bats, it is also on a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ) and a candidate for Special Area of Conservation ( SAC ) European Union protective status.

Redgrave and Lopham Fen is a National Nature Reserve, SSSI, Ramsar Site and Natura 2000 site situated on the border between Norfolk and Suffolk, in England, UK.

The 500 acre ( 2. 0 km² ) reserve is situated one mile east of Llanelli and five miles ( 8 km ) north of Swansea in south Wales, on the eastern side of Carmarthen Bay, and part of the Burry Inlet estuary which is an SSSI ( Site of Special Scientific Interest ), an SPA ( Special Protection Area ), and a Ramsar Site.

To the south of the town in Ridgewood the Uckfield Millennium Green is present on a site of disused clay pits ( now a SSSI )

The Forth shoreline is an SSSI both on account of its geology and its biological habitats, such as its mudflats which support numerous species of sea birds, many of which are to be seen and heard in and around North Queensferry.

Situated in the Lower Aire Valley, and forming part of Fairburn & Newton Ings SSSI, RSPB Fairburn Ings is a Local Nature Reserve ( LNR ), with a focus mainly on wildfowl and waders, although many other birds can be seen.

The site's principal interest and the reason for its designation as an SSSI is the presence of a population of the True Service-tree ( Sorbus domestica ) growing on the cliffs.

The Upper Fowey SSSI is a floodplain on the southern slopes of Bodmin Moor and is designated for its wet heath vegetation and herbaceous valley-floor mire communities.

It is situated within Pamber civil parish and backs on to Pamber Forest, a SSSI and remnant of the much larger ancient Royal Forest of Pamber.

There are two nature reserves near the town, both of which are located on the Duddon Estuary ; an internationally important area for wildlife and designated a ' Site of Special Scientific Interest ' or SSSI.

This vegetation type is found elsewhere only on Porton Down SSSI and on the Brecklands.

In addition there is also an SSSI at Amble Marshes on the River Amble which flows into the Camel Estuary between Wadebridge and Rock.

The rock strata date from the Prídolí Epoch of the Silurian ; the exceptional exposure here and on the adjoining Albion Sands have resulted in the location's inclusion in the Geological Conservation Review as a candidate for protection as a geological site of special scientific interest ( SSSI ).

The peninsula contains 3 main Sites of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ), both noted for their endangered insects and plants, as well as their geology.

Nearby is the limestone Ebbor Gorge, a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ) and a more tranquil spot than the busy Wookey Hole, which is itself an SSSI for both biological and geological reasons.

The cliffs from Backways Cove, south of Trebarwith Strand to Willapark just to the south of Boscastle are part of the Tintagel Cliffs SSSI ( a Site of Special Scientific Interest ), designated for both its maritime heaths and geological features.

South-west of the town is the Friar's Oven SSSI which is the site of herb-rich calcareous grassland classified as the Upright Brome ( Bromus erectus ) type, and north-east is the Windsor Hill Quarry geological SSSI, and also the Windsor Hill Marsh biological SSSI, a marshy silted pond with adjacent damp, slightly acidic grassland which is of interest for its diverse flora, in large part down to the varied habitats present within the small area.

The decision to notify an SSSI is made by the official nature conservation body ( the appropriate conservation body ) for that part of the United Kingdom: Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Natural England, Scottish Natural Heritage or the Countryside Council for Wales.

The requirement for consultation covers any development which might affect the interest, not just developments within the SSSI itself — for example, a development a long way upstream of a wetland SSSI might require consultation.

Recently, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds ( RSPB ) and the local landowner were awarded the designation of a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ) from English Nature.

SPAs may extend below low tide into the sea, and for these areas SSSI notification is not possible.
