William Mahone ( 1826 – 1895 ), a Virginia Military Institute ( VMI ) engineering graduate of the class of 1847, was hired by Dr. Francis Mallory build the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad beginning in 1853 and eventually became its president in the pre-Civil War era.

After Mallory was sliding for a while, the Sliders met back with Dr. Geiger in the episode " Eye of the Storm ", and he attempted to unmerge Quinn from his double.

A rail link to the west had long been a dream of Norfolk citizens led by Dr. Francis Mallory.

Dr. Francis Mallory ( 1807 – 1860 ) a former Representative in the United States Congress and later a member of the Virginia General Assembly was named the railroad's first president.

Dr, Mallory was graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1831 and practiced in Norfolk, Virginia.

Dr. Mallory served as a Representative in the U. S. Congress, as a Delegate in the Virginia General Assembly, and as a Navy Agent in Norfolk appointed by President Millard Fillmore.

In 1851, Dr. Mallory and the Norfolk interests finally succeeded in obtaining a charter and financing from the Virginia Board of Public Works to form the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad ( N & P ).

Dr. Mallory survived the Yellow Fever Epidemic which swept through Norfolk in 1855 and killed 2, 000 of its 6, 000 citizens.

Dr. Mallory died in Norfolk on March 26, 1860, and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery there.

The Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad, organized by Dr. Francis Mallory of Norfolk was built between 1853 and 1858 by a young civil engineer named William Mahone ( 1826-1895 ).

Dr. Wood was commended by Commodore Sloat, Secretary Bankcroft, and Senator Mallory, Chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs in the Senate of the United States for his successful mission behind enemy lines in Mexico in 1846 and his communication to Commodore Sloat which enabled the US Navy to acquire California at the onset of the War with Mexico.
