The estate is recorded in 1451 as " Bouchmorale ", and was later tenanted by Alexander Gordon, second son of the 1st Earl of Huntly.

This view was met with ridicule, but was later supported by Hugh Edwin Strickland and Alexander Gordon Melville in their 1848 monograph The Dodo and Its Kindred, which attempted to separate myth from reality.

The Duke at the time, the founder and colonel of the regiment, was the Duchess of Richmond's father, and he saw no active service overseas during the Napoleonic Wars ; his son and the Duchess's brother, the Marquis of Huntly ( later the 5th Duke ) was a distinguished general, but also missed the Waterloo campaign ; the senior representative of the family at the battle was in fact the Duchess's own twenty-three-year-old son, the Earl of March, who would eventually become the 5th Duke's heir in 1836, and who served as a major and an aide de camp to the Duke of Wellington ; another branch of the family was represented by another ADC, Colonel Sir Alexander Gordon, aged twenty-eight or twenty-nine, the brother of the Earl of Aberdeen ; in reality, both were young men similar in age and duty to Lord Hay.

Stewart was born in 1739, son of Alexander Stewart alderman of Londonderry in 1760 and the nephew of Robert Cowan, the wealthy Governor of Bombay

In 1739 he married his first wife, Anne Bayne, the daughter of a professor of Scots law at Edinburgh, Alexander Bayne of Rires ( c. 1684 – 1737 ), and Mary Carstairs ( 1695 ?– 1759 ).

His daughter ( died 1739 ) was married firstly to a German colonel Strasburgh, and then from 1699 or 1700 to his friend in Russian service General Alexander Gordon, author of " The History of Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia " book.

On April 5, 1802, Alexander married Janetta Waddel, the daughter of a Presbyterian preacher, James Waddel ( 1739 – 1805 ), whose eloquence was described in William Wirt's Letters of a British Spy ( 1803 ).

He graduated from Yale College in 1731, and settled in New York City, where he engaged in the shipping business with William Alexander, Lord Stirling whose sister Mary Alexander he married on November 3, 1739.

The map shows clearly to what degree the descriptive data of older explorations ( i. e. Vasili Pronchishchev, 1735 – 36 ; Hariton Laptev, 1739 – 43 ; Semyon Čeluskin, 1735 – 43 ; Fyodor Minin and Dmitriy Sterlegov, 1740 ; and Alexander Theodor von Middendorff, 1843 ) could be trusted when drafting a map from many sources and trying to amalgamate them into a single image.

The Turks amplified and enlarged the citadel, which was sieged and taken by the Russians on four occasions: in 1739 by Burkhard Christoph von Munnich, in 1769 by Prince Alexander Galitzine, in 1788 by Prince Josias of Coburg, and Ivan Saltykov, in 1807 by Ivan Michelson.

The titles became dormant upon the death of the fifth Earl in 1739, although one William Alexander of New York, known to history as Major General Lord Stirling of the Continental Army, years before the American Revolutionary War pursued a claim to succeed to the dormant earldom.
