Extreme Unction was the usual name for the sacrament in the West from the late twelfth century until 1972, and was thus used at the Council of Trent and in the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia.

That doctrine had been written about much earlier by Augustine of Hippo and was eventually defined a dogma by the Council of Trent.

The popularity and success of the Baroque style was encouraged by the Roman Catholic Church, which had decided at the time of the Council of Trent, in response to the Protestant Reformation, that the arts should communicate religious themes in direct and emotional involvement.

The Council of Trent, the summation of the Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation, declared the entire book, both Hebrew text and Greek additions, to be canonical.

As bishop he put into effect the reforming decrees of the Council of Trent.

At the Council of Trent, on 15 November 1551, the necessity for a second conversion after baptism was delineated:

Because clerics resisted it, the celibacy mandate was restated at the Second Lateran Council ( 1139 ) and the Council of Trent ( 1545 – 64 ).

The Council of Trent () was an Ecumenical Council of the Roman Catholic Church.

During the pontificate of Pope Paul III the Council fathers met for the first through eighth sessions in Trent ( 1545 – 7 ), and for the ninth through eleventh sessions in Bologna ( 1547 ).

Under Pope Julius III, the Council met in Trent ( 1551 – 52 ) for the twelfth through sixteenth sessions, and under Pope Pius IV, the seventeenth through twenty-fifth sessions took place in Trent ( 1559 – 63 ).

The Council of Trent, delayed and interrupted several times because of political or religious disagreements, was a major reform council and the most impressive embodiment of the ideals of the Counter-Reformation.

When announcing Vatican II, Pope John XXIII stated that the precepts of the Council of Trent continue to the modern day, a position that was reaffirmed by Pope Paul VI.

Pope Paul III convoked the Council of Trent

Faced with a Turkish attack, Charles held the support of the Protestant German rulers, all of whom delayed the opening of the Council of Trent.

Unable, however, to resist the urging of Charles V, the pope, after proposing Mantua as the place of meeting, convened the council at Trent ( at that time a free city of the Holy Roman Empire under a prince-bishop ), on December 13, 1545 ; the Pope's decision to transfer it to Bologna in March, 1547 on the pretext of avoiding a plague failed to take effect and the Council was indefinitely prorogued on 17 September 1549.

Much more than the Second Council of Nicaea ( 787 ) the Council fathers of Trent stressed the pedagogical purpose of Christian images.

The most comprehensive history is still Hubert Jedin's The History of the Council of Trent ( Geschichte des Konzils von Trient ) with about 2500 pages in four volumes: The History of the Council of Trent, The fight for a Council ( Vol I, 1951 ); The History of the Council of Trent The first Sessions in Trent ( 1545 – 1547 ) ( Vol II, 1957 ); The History of the Council of Trent Sessions in Bologna 1547 – 1548 and Trent 1551 – 1552 ( Vol III, 1970, 1998 ); The History of the Council of Trent Third Period and Conclusion ( Vol IV, 1976 ).

Moreover, the Church decreed lesser chastisements against laymen suspected of sympathy with Cathars, at the 1235 Council of Narbonne.

# Second Council of Constantinople ( 553 ) repudiated the Three Chapters as Nestorian, condemned Origen of Alexandria, decreed the Theopaschite Formula.

Departmental tasks, coordination measures and implementation of laws decreed by the City Parliament are carried by the City Council.

The 4th century Council of Rome decreed that the author of 1 John and that of 2 and 3 John should be regarded as distinct individuals.

This Council decreed that the cardinal electors must meet within ten days of the pope's death, and that they must remain in seclusion until a pope has been elected ; this was prompted by the three-year Sede Vacante following the death of Pope Clement IV in 1268.

Sedevacantists, on the other hand, claim that the infallible Magisterium of the Catholic Church could not have decreed the changes made in the name of the Second Vatican Council, and conclude that those who issued these changes could not have been acting with the authority of the Catholic Church.

A fourth century Council of Rome decreed that John the Evangelist should be distinguished from John the Presbyter.

Departmental tasks, coordination measures and implementation of laws decreed by the City Parliament are carried by the City Council.

The Council of Ephesus decreed in 431 that Mary is Theotokos because her son Jesus is one person who is both God and man, divine and human.

The Fourth Council of the Lateran, held under Pope Innocent III, decreed ( canon xv ): " We interdict hunting or hawking to all clerics ".

The Council denounced Nestorius ' teaching as erroneous and decreed that Jesus was one person, not two separate people: complete God and complete man, with a rational soul and body.

During his pontificate, he convened the First Vatican Council in 1869, which decreed papal infallibility.

The original Catholic Canon law on the subject, intended to prevent clandestine marriages, was decreed in Canon 51 of the Lateran IV Council in 1215 ; until then, the public announce in church of marriages to be contracted was only done in some areas.

The Council of Trent taught that only the priest who celebrated Mass was bound by divine law to receive communion under both species, and that Christ, whole and entire, and a true sacrament are received under either form alone, and therefore, as regards its fruits, those who receive one species only are not deprived of any grace necessary to salvation "; and it decreed: " If anyone says that the holy Catholic Church was not moved by just causes and reasons that laymen and clerics when not consecrating should communicate under the form of bread only, or has erred in this, let him be anathema.

Next year, they decreed the closure of what for them was still the Council of Basel.

Considerable powers had been decreed to Church councils by the Council of Constance, which amid the troubles of the Western Schism had proclaimed the superiority, in certain cases, of the council over the pope, and the fathers at Basel insisted upon their right of remaining assembled.

On 4 December 1963, the Second Vatican Council decreed in Chapter II of its Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium:

The Third Council of Carthage ( 393 ) and the Second Council of Orleans ( 541 ) reiterated the prohibition of feasting in churches, and the Trullan Council of 692 decreed that honey and milk were not to be offered on the altar ( Canon 57 ), and that those who held love feasts in churches should be excommunicated ( Canon 74 ).

This distinction is spelled out in the dogmatic conclusions of the Seventh Ecumenical Council ( 787 ), which also decreed that iconoclasm ( forbidding icons and their veneration ) is a heresy that amounts to a denial of the incarnation of Jesus.

Later that month, on 15 August 1343 the Council of the Realm issued letters throughout the two kingdoms stating that the king and the Council of the Realm had decreed to create his youngest son Haakon the King of Norway.

The Second Council of Nicaea in 787 decreed that every altar should contain a relic, making it clear that this was already the norm, as it remains to the present day in the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

If the Council accepts these amendments then the legislation is approved.

If the Council still does not approve the Parliament's position, then the text is taken to a " Conciliation Committee " composed of the Council members plus an equal number of MEPs.

If a Committee manages to adopt a joint text, it then has to be approved in a third reading by both the Council and Parliament or the proposal is abandoned.

If the king had joined, its resolutions would have received the sanction of the law ; but he refused, and approached the newly formed Roman Catholic League of lords, whose members pledged themselves to support the king, the Catholic Church, and the Council.
