In Quebec City, municipal officials built a 3 metre ( 10 ft ) high wall around the portion of the city where the Summit of the Americas was being held, which only residents, delegates to the summit, and certain accredited journalists were allowed to pass through.

However, in 1774, the British Parliament passed the Quebec Act, which restored the French civil law for matters of private law ( e. g., contracts, property, successions ), while keeping the English common law as the basis for public law in the colony, notably the criminal law.

The common law constitutes the basis of the legal systems of: England and Wales, Northern Ireland, Ireland, federal law in the United States and the law of individual U. S. states ( except Louisiana ), federal law throughout Canada and the law of the individual provinces and territories ( except Quebec ), Australia ( both federal and individual states ), Kenya, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Pakistan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, The Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Granadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, and many other generally English-speaking countries or Commonwealth countries ( except Scotland, which is bijuridicial, and Malta ).

Essentially, every country that was colonised at some time by England, Great Britain, or the United Kingdom uses common law except those that were formerly colonised by other nations, such as Quebec ( which follows the law of France in part ), South Africa and Sri Lanka ( which follow Roman Dutch law ), where the prior civil law system was retained to respect the civil rights of the local colonists.

All but one of the provinces of Canada use a common law system ( the exception being Quebec, which uses a civil law system for issues arising within provincial jurisdiction, such as property ownership and contracts ).

* 1981-November 4-5: In the " Night of the Long Knives " ( French: " La Nuit des Longs Couteaux "), Pierre Trudeau makes a constitutional deal with nine anglophone provinces without Quebec.

* It is an important stop on the north-south trunk of the " route verte " cycling path which makes it possible for nature lovers who are also pedaling enthusiasts to make short trips or excursions lasting several days from as far south as Blainville, Quebec on the outskirts of Montreal and as far north as Mont-Tremblant, Quebec without ever sharing the road with a motorized vehicle.

It surrounds the Richelieu River as the river makes its way from Lake Champlain in the United States north to the Saint Lawrence River northeast of Montreal at Sorel-Tracy, Quebec.

Although as in other jurisdictions a resident of Quebec may informally use whatever name he or she wants, procedures for formal name change are very strict as Quebec ( unlike the rest of Canada ) operates under a civil law system.

The decision must be authorized by the Director of Civil Status, and requires a valid reason for changing the name, including long-term use of the new name ( in the Montreuil case cited below, the Quebec appeals court has considered five years ' use to be a sufficient reason ), difficulty of use due to spelling or pronunciation, or bearing a name that another person has made infamous.

( Montreuil was initially prevented from changing her name despite this ruling on the grounds that she had not established general use, as normally required for a name change ; the Quebec appeals court finally authorized the change on November 7, 2002.
